THE SUCCESS SYNDROME

In his book, Halftime, Bob Buford challenges men to change the game plan for their lives from success to significance. He writes that men pursue success the first half of their lives, but this quest always ends in a need for something more. In a time of evaluation, each man must ask himself the hard questions of life. If a man has answered these questions correctly, he will not get caught up in the "success-syndrome" of our day, but will desire to be and do something significant in the last half of his life.

ONLY MY DAILY BREAD

"Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.  Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the Lord?'  Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God."  (Proverbs 30:8b-9)

No amount of wealth will ever satisfy a person's basic needs for security and significance, which can only be met by God.

YOU ARE SIGNIFICANT

Emily in Our Town who signs her address as:
            Grovers Corners
            New Hampshire
            United States of American
            Western Hemisphere
            Planet Earth
            Solar System
            The Universe
            Mind of God
In the mind of God… that's about as significant as you can get, whether you sit at a typewriter, behind the wheel of a bus, at the desk in a classroom, in a chair by your kitchen table… or lay in bed and pray.  Your life is hidden with Christ.  You enrich His inheritance.  You are His ambassador.  In Him your life has depth and meaning and purpose, no matter what you do.
Peter Kreeft has said, "The point of this life…is to become the person God can love perfectly, to satisfy His thirst to love.  Being counts more than doing, the singer more than the song.  We had better stop looking for escape hatches, for this is our hatchery."
It's my prayer that… you will discover the significance that has been yours all along as a child of the King.  You may not be able to know the meaning of every event, but you can know that every event is meaningful.
            And you are significant.
