“Does the Lord delight in
burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the
fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22 NIV)
The
response called for in the Bible to the hearing of the words of God is not mere
assent, but faith in God who speaks the promise, obedience to the God who
commands, faithfulness to the God who has made His covenant plain, return to
the God who warns, and hope in the God who foretells the future. To respond to
God's words is to respond to God: God is present in the speaking of His words.
